My Top 5 Films of 2017 (audio only podcast)
I've been seeing a lot of different people sharing their top 5 lists for 2017 and I felt I really ought to weigh in. Since I've been getting more into film reviewing and criticism in the past two years, I'm finding myself with a really firm opinion on this year's crop. So, here's my personal Top 5 Films of 2017, and a whole mess of tangentially related thoughts besides!

With temperatures of 42 degrees accompanied by nonstop rain overnight, today the weather is hitting a high of 49 in Portland Maine. And all the snow and ice is melting. Just two days ago we had piles of snow over five feet high. Now there's almost nothing, and the day has only just begun. This is not normal, by a long shot. This is very bad.

D. made a guest appearance to co-host my show on WMPG and kept me company after the show was over and I was waiting for Metro to send out the first bus of the day. Through no fault of Red Letter Media's, D. just couldn't keep those eyes open. D. was seriously doing this for like a half hour before I got it on video recorded on 2015-12-06 at 8:17am

A thunderstorm rolled through Portland Maine just now, with hail actually coming down. As I type this, just minutes afterward, you can regularly hear the sirens of emergency service vehicles rushing through the city. Some of the hail were over an inch in length.

Best parts imo 4:47 I love the buildup to 4:59 7:06 idk I just like it 12:26 this is literally the part we all know, and we all know it for a reason. Evangelion is basically about Christian theology and fighting against the nihilism and immorality of Zionist Gnoticism that believes humanity is corrupt and needs to merge into a singular demonic being into perfection rather than accepting who they are. Each character has their own saint symbolism, Rei for example being a metaphor for Transgenderism and Transhumanism and Shinji as an abused messiah figure. You get the point. There, I saved you countless years of schizo scrolling. Now stop making 7 hour video essays on this decades old anime please and let me enjoy my autist animes in peace.
Imma watch it, but interesting observation, as a follower of the Good News, I will keep this in mind.
@@Napoleon_Bonaparte1804 The anime is very convoluted and depressing. I'm not a fan of it, the themes are too dark for me to enjoy. I understand what the show is about and why people like it but damn, is it so bad if I just want to watch cool giant robots fight each other without having an existential crisis watching a bunch of teens be psychologically tortured in a fight against some metaphysical gnostic demonic super-being that wants to merge humanity into this soulless mess to transcend their damned sinful form? When the creator was confronted on the religious symbolism included in the show, he brushed it off and said it was purely an artistic choice. You either get it or you don't, no point in trying to explain it.

@@hellsonion514 So would you say in the sense that Shinji and Asuka are like inverted male and female roles battling the preset masculine/feminine image prescribed to them? Shinji is fruitier than a fruit salad but he tries too hard to be a "man", while Kaworu tells him that his insecurities are beautiful like shards of glass. The inner subconcious he refuses to accept. His effeminacy is repressed down and he fantasies about anyone and everyone. In my personal opinion, I think Shinji is homosexual in denial and without the Eva, a symbolic Adam - that which Shinji cannot pilot, he feels worthless. The merging of Rei and Kaworu into this anti-Christ being of kabbalistic infinity destroys the world and every living creature is merged into a singular conscience devoid of any free-will because of humanities twisted and endless march towards hedonistic "progress". Shinji refuses to accept himself and ends up suffering further even after the HIP by strangling Asuka, where neither of whom love each other. He simply is not enough of a man and Asuka is not enough of a woman.
I’ve listened to this over the years to help me write essays, focus on on assignments, and while reading and it’s genuinely been a productive time. Finishing up an essay to this music is a good time lmao

IMO this specific rendition of the ninth symphony by the BRTN Philharmonic is the single best one that I can find on RUclips or Spotify. I don't know why but every other one I try to listen to by other orchestras just isn't as good as this one.

Imagine if Stanley Kubrick had made a TV series. That's basically what Evangelion felt like when I watched it. It was quite an experience (especially the ending).
Yes, there's no question Kubrick had a big influence on Evangelion. In the climax of The End of Evangelion, there is even a musical homage to the iconic percussion of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and there are many visual similarities. This is because Stanley Kubrick and Hideaki Anno both know, at least subconsciously, some of the most powerful ways to convey a message to an audience is through the symbolic processing of the right hemisphere of the brain. They're next level. 🌟

Anno and his team really know how to use the medium. This scene worked because it was animated--it's the rigidity and illegibility of the Eva's posture and expression that allows us to feel Shinji's turmoil. It's the Kuleshov Effect in excelsis! If we saw any breathing, any twitching, any shifting, we'd focus on that instead, but stillness--absolute stillness--traps us in the entry plug with Shinji. It's genuinely one of the most breathtaking shots I've seen in any medium, up there with Jupiter backlit by the sun in 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Writer, the Scientist, and the Stalker sitting in the rain in Tarkovsky's Stalker.
